Hi Sam! Tell me a bit about your background

Sam

I Did my apprenticeship with Mercedes-Benz, after doing National Service in Finland.

TOTM

Wow! Is one of your parents from Finland?

Sam

My mother is Finish and I hold two passports. When I finished school, I had an obligation to do my National Service. After that I was unsure of what I wanted to do. I’ve always loved cars and my dad always has worked on cars – so I went with the motor industry.

TOTM

Aside from Finland, where are you from, Sam?

Sam

I am from Gloucester. I was born there, and then we went back to Finland from age 5 to 10. I speak Finnish and stayed in England until 18.

TOTM

So, did travelling and living in different countries influence your decision to come to Australia?

Sam

Yes – definitely. I was well-travelled as a youngster. When I chose the motor trade that was part of the reason, because the good thing about having a trade is that you can take it with you and find a Gavin and get a job in Australia!

TOTM

how did you find Gavin?

Sam

I First heard about TOTM at Mercedes-Benz training College – in Milton Keynes – one of the other techs spoke about it. And I forgot the details until I got out here. I thought it might be called ‘Tech Assist’ or something. I Googled and found them!

I came here in December on a Working Holiday Visa – then got in touch with Gavin – half way through December, wanting a job by the end of January, and Gavin said, “I have a position with Audi. Are you interested?” I had an interview with Audi just after Christmas – I had to take the train back from Melbourne on Boxing Day. Steve from Techs on the Move picked me up and took me to the interview. He called the next day and asked how I went; then he asked if I was interested in having another interview at Jaguar/Land Rover. I did that and the job at Jaguar Land Rover started as I wanted, at the end of January.

How do you find Sydney?

Sam

I do love Sydney. There is so much going on here. I have an apartment right in the city. I think because Gloucester is a bit rural I have always been fascinated by cities. A few of my friends were out a few nights ago. We went to see Sydney play Chelsea FC at ANZ stadium (TOTM: the site of 2000 Sydney Olympics) – that was an amazing experience!

TOTM

What is different about working in Sydney?

Sam

What I like about it is that I start earlier and finish earlier. Winter here is great. During winter in the UK it is pitch black when you start and when you finish work. Here, because I finish early, I get out to enjoy a nice sunny day at the end of work.

TOTM

What has been your favorite Aussie adventure so far?

Sam

Fraser island Tour was amazing – what an incredible place. Closer to home, the Blue Mountains are amazing. Being a football fan I do think that the Sydney v. Chelsea FC was my personal highlight. I also enjoyed ANZAC day. I didn't know anything about ANZAC. I learned a lot and then, what a party!

TOTM

Would your recommend working with Techs on the Move?

Sam

They are just fantastic! We are just sorting out my sponsored Visa – Gavin and Steve are superb. Steve has picked me up and taken me to interviews. They check in every month and make sure that I am doing well. And the pay a lot better than it is in the UK as well.

TOTM

Do you see Australia as a long-term place for you?

Sam

I can see myself settling here – (I haven’t told my mum yet!)
